We are contributing to UN’s Sustainable Development Goals

We are actively promoting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development published by the UN. In addition to participating in global initiatives, such as the UN Global Compact LEAD, we also work with several local expert organizations to promote and achieve the SDGs.

We have defined goals for improvement in the areas where our negative impact is consequential, and on the other hand, where the potential for positive impact is the greatest. While we take note of all SDGs, we focus on eight of the most relevant ones where our contribution is the most valuable. An example of a concrete action with a powerful impact is our Biofore Site program, which measures factory performance and sustainability based on nearly 40 indicators.

What is the purpose of SDGs?

Increased environmental, social and economic
production site performance

With the SDGs in mind, we developed the Biofore Site program that aims to improve our production sites’ environmental, social and economic performance to meet UPM’s 2030 targets while taking our stakeholders' focus areas into consideration.

For instance, switching to fully renewable electricity in 6 (out of our 10) sites has contributed to a 47% reduction in our operational and purchased energy emissions since 2015. A continuous improvement approach helps improve site performance and develop the sustainable solutions we offer our customers.

The Biofore Site program facilitates the growth of a strong sustainability culture and employee engagement while increasing transparency. Our contribution to SDG 12, in which packaging is part of sustainable consumption and production, is particularly relevant.
