Changshu factory recognized as a Green Company in China

Press Release 17.7.2018 12:23 EEST

The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals are the framework that governments, business and civil society use to drive the sustainability agenda. With those goals in mind, UPM Raflatac developed the Biofore Site™ concept and set responsibility targets for 2030 that aim to improve its environmental, social and economic performance. The aim is to build a site-specific roadmap that includes auditing, measuring and evaluating progress. The Biofore Site concept will facilitate growth of a strong sustainability culture and increase transparency.

The UPM Raflatac Changshu factory has been recognized as a Green Company in an Environment Credit rating by the Changshu government in China. The factory received the highest level recognition of 5 levels (Green/Blue/Yellow/Red/Black). This reflects the factory performance in three areas: environmental management and emissions, regulatory compliance and social impact.

“We have put a lot of effort into developing sustainability performance and we are honoured to receive this recognition. In 2017, there were 582 companies assessed in Changshu District, of which only 30 were classified as green,” says Jukka Piitulainen, General Manager, UPM Raflatac APAC Factories.

“Our team effort means we are now considered a benchmark company in the region.”

UPM Raflatac aims to label a smarter future by improving the sustainability performance of its production sites through the Biofore Site™ concept. This concept is aligned with UN Sustainability development goals and provides a framework for meeting the UPM 2030 responsibility targets in environmental, social and economic performance.

Yifan Qian, Environmental Manger at the Changshu factory says:

“We have implemented several initiatives as part of our Biofore site concept to improve our environmental performance. For example, reducing pollution incidents through the Clean Run programme, reducing air emissions with carbon filtering systems, reducing energy and water use and making sure we are sorting waste properly."

We are also supporting the development of more sustainable communities through our safety and well-being initiatives, Family Day activities, University Scholarships and cooperation with the China Women’s Development Foundation (CWDF).

Our sustainability actions in China and elsewhere around the world clearly demonstrate that UPM Raflatac is the partner of choice for customers, end-users, suppliers and other stakeholders.
