Now UPM Raflatac has found new solutions for a more sustainable logistics system on the company’s two routes in Europe.

By re-planning of routes, UPM Raflatac has decreased the amount of trucks in use.

TAKEAWAYS

1. Logistics and transportation have a big impact on the environment worldwide

2. UPM Raflatac conducted two logistics projects to find sustainability benefits

3. Thanks to change in transportation equipment and re-planning of routes, UPM Raflatac has been able to reduce CO2 emissions

Tackling climate change with logistics optimisation

UPM Raflatac is making a lot of actions to reduce daily transport costs. As UPM Raflatac is aware of the global challenges related to transport, such as climate change, it also takes bigger actions towards a more effective – and a more sustainable – logistics system.

In 2017, UPM Raflatac had sustainable logistics actions in routes, which pass through five European countries. These projects were done together with UPM Raflatac's long-time partner Kuehne + Nagel, a global provider of supply chain solutions.

“By working on the processes of both companies, we were able to improve the service, reduce the CO2 emissions and the transport costs,” tells Craig England, Logistics Operations Manager of EMEIA, who is responsible for the distribution network of UPM Raflatac.

According to England, other benefits include better buffering capacity and better secured delivery time.

But how these benefits were achieved? In these projects, there were found two successful solutions. Firstly, single deck trailers were changed to double deck trailers. Secondly, two main European routes were re-planned to enhance the transportation system and to decrease the amount of trucks in use. Thanks to these solutions, fuel consumption and therefore CO2 emissions were reduced at annual level.

Changing single deck trailers to double deck trailers was one of the successful solutions to improve sustainable logistics system.

Significant CO2 reductions on the routes

With logistical efficiency, UPM Raflatac was able to achieve significant reductions in CO2 emissions on both routes. On the first route, which starts from Poland, passes through Germany and France and has Switzerland as its final destination, CO2 emissions are now reduced by 23 % annually.

For the second route, the reductions are 31 % annually. The route starts from Poland, passes through Germany and France and ends up to Spain.

England gives useful tips for others considering the same kind of project.

“You should involve the stakeholder from the start of the projects and find out if double deck trailers can be utilized.”

According to him, it is also important to review the transport planning for stock deliveries in order to utilize the maximum load capacity of trucks.

Thanks to these successful projects, UPM Raflatac's logistics system is now even more carefully planned and optimized in Europe. Overall, UPM Raflatac continues to review and adapt the transport network for finding solutions to more sustainable logistics, achieving both CO2 emissions and cost reductions.

Read more about UPM's logistics optimisation »

Find out more about UPM's cost-effective and environmentally friendly deliveries »

Read more about UPM Raflatac's sustainable label manufacturing »

UPM Raflatac is labeling a smarter future by developing innovative and sustainable labeling solutions complemented with world-class service.
