PrintabilityPre-press work: This is natural wood and the face material is very absorbent. Ink and primer volumes should be adjusted to compensate for the absorption related to the nature of the wood material. The face material may have variations in shade. At pre-press stage, image colours may be adjusted to compensate for the natural red/brown wood tone changes. Printable with UV flexo, UV offset, UV silk-screen. Also printable with HP Indigo after applying an HP Indigo primer. By applying a translucent ink, the colour of the wood can be changed to resemble other types of wood. Wood’s inherent growing process creates natural imperfections; the face material will contain imperfections like dark areas, black spots or even small holes/cracks. Due to the size constraint of the logs and the removal of natural wood defects, there will be typically more joins than with other materials, and they will be randomly situated in the coil. The texture of the face material requires higher printing pressure than normal. Heat-set inks are not recommended, as over-drying the laminate may curl the face. Thick UV-flexo inks’ coverage may also cause curling issues. For digital printers we recommend adding trim marks to all web print files, otherwise the press may read the natural wood grain pattern of the face and misplace the print or die-cut spot.
Additional infoEmbossing: Too deep embossing might cause cracks. The face material can be both embossed and de-bossed, although too deep embossing might cause cracks. Brass dies yield the best results. Rounded edges are recommended to avoid unexpected cracks in the wood. Check with your preferred die-cutting supplier for technical recommendations. Foil stamping: The product can be stamped either with hot or cold foil. Testing is critical to ensure foiling success. Cold foil needs extra care, as absorption may critically reduce the glue needed for the stamping process; make sure to compensate for this absorption by increasing the volume of glue. Die-cutting: The cutting blades do not need special treatment as such because wood cuts very much like paper, but Cherry Veneer is carried on a thin PET. The overall face material is quite thick and made of two different materials. Check for die-cutting recommendations with your tool supplier. Labelling: Cherry Veneer is relatively stiff and this brings some pre-dispensing risks if the laminate goes through sharp direction changes. The wood grain is oriented in the transverse direction, i.e. it does not run in machine-direction (MD), but in cross-direction (CD). This must be taken into account in case the label is going to be folded or scored. Nevertheless, CD grain orientation allows labelling safely round shapes. Testing is recommended to ensure a successful adhesion.
Storage recommendationsCherry Veneer is a special material and we recommend to read the converting and handling information carefully. Natural wood is sensitive to moisture changes. Store the laminate, still inside its original packaging, in the printing hall for 24 hours prior to printing. Always keep the reels wrapped in plastic between different working stages to prevent moisture loss. This material, regardless whether it is unconverted laminate reels or converted label reels, should always be stored wrapped in plastic in standard conditions: 20°C and 50%rH.
