Population is growing rapidly, which sets new challenges in terms of resource scarcity. Simultaneously global wealth is on the increase, which, in turn, accelerates the demand for resources, as the world is consuming goods and services faster than ever. In addition, legislative pressure for all stakeholders in the value chain to ensure more effective recycling is also increasing rapidly.</p><h2>Recycling requires smart action and team players</h2><p>All in all, this means that in the future, we need to be smart about how we use the raw materials that we have. New technological and chemical innovations will be the future game-changers, but commitments to sustainability and circular economy at brand and consumer levels will become increasingly important. We can only turn the ship around with seamless cooperation, and recycling is one of those things that calls for all stakeholders’ input in an efficient circular economy. </p><h2>First Reduce then Recycle</h2><p>Ideally, we should aim at reducing as much as we can at both corporate and consumer levels, then reuse the resources and materials several times. If we can’t reuse, then last straw is to <strong>recycle</strong>. This way the raw materials are coming back to the system, and the circular motion of the plastics economy is ensured.</p><p>The big brands of this world are making strong commitments to operate more sustainably through their own strategies, and also by joining the<strong> Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s New Plastics Global Commitment</strong>, which we at UPM Raflatac are part of too. Through our commitments to the <strong>Ellen MacArthur Foundation </strong>we want to show that recycling is an important issue for us. More importantly, as actions speak louder than words, our commitments help us steer the hard work and actions we are taking towards better sustainability.</p><p>In my view, enabling better recyclability might even be our biggest commitment going forward, as it requires developing partnerships and synergies between a wide range of stakeholders. Read more about <strong>Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s New Plastics Global Commitment</strong> and our commitments in the link at the bottom of this page.</p><h2>UPM Raflatac enabling better recyclability</h2><p>If we think of the world of labels, especially for the home and personal care packaging that are quite often made out of rigid plastic due to the products’ functional requirements, it is our top priority to ensure that our labels are not be a barrier to recycling.</p><p>The way we at UPM Raflatac are enabling better recyclability of our customers and brand owners’ products by developing innovations, is two-fold:</p><p> <strong>1. Raw materials support recycling and recyclability</strong></p><p>Firstly, it’s all about the choice of raw material for a label which will go on a package. We can either use fossil-based raw material, or alternatively, renewable materials like paper, or materials with recycled content, such as our UPM Raflatac Vanish™ PCR (post-consumer content) with up to 90% recycled content.</p><p>By using recycled content we’re also stimulating the market to utilize recycled content more and as a result, harness recycling. In order to move away from the fossil-based raw materials, it is vital that we all are actively creating demand for recycling and recycled raw materials.</p><p> <strong>2. Optimizing recyclability for end-of-life is crucial</strong></p><p>Secondly, we need consider solutions that support and optimize the recyclability of labels and packaging. What I mean by this is the functionality, what happens to the package when it’s recycled.</p><p>For this we have developed label adhesives for PET and glass bottles that wash off in an industrial recycling process. We also have removable adhesives that enable consumers remove the labels at home. These are important factors that optimize the recyclability of the base package.</p><p>When you throw your shampoo or cleaning liquid bottle away, by our smart choices of label materials and optimized recyclability it can be recycled fully, rather than just parts of it – thanks to the wash-off adhesives that play an important role in the recycling process and enable the recycling of the PET.</p><h2>UPM Raflatac’s solutions for enhanced recyclability</h2><p> <strong>RafCycle® by UPM Raflatac</strong>: With our innovative RafCycle recycling concept we offer a new life for label waste. We already have more than 150 RafCycle partners in Europe, and more are joining us all the time.</p><p> <strong>Vanish PCR</strong>: These ultrathin no-label look labels that the Vanish range offers feature 90% recycled content face and liners. We can, and we do. And we have taken another key step towards reaching such goals.</p><p> <img src="http://assets.upmraflatac.com/Blog/UPM-Raflatac-Blog-Timo-Kekki-main.jpg" alt="" style="margin:5px 5px 5px 0px;" /> </p><p>In the face of so many challenges, humanity needs more than bold thinkers and brave decision makers. It also requires team players who understand that cooperation gives extra strength and possibilities that make climbing even the highest peaks possible. Our vision of the future encompasses just that – hard work, dedication and collaboration for a greater good.</p><h2>A New Plastics Economy</h2><p>This greater good I envision is a world in which plastic waste is no longer a problem. At UPM Raflatac, we have been on a journey towards making the packaging industry more sustainable for many years now. But now we are going the extra mile in boosting our sustainability solutions and fulfilling our promise of labeling a smarter future beyond fossils.</p><p>Alongside many other industry stakeholders, we have partnered with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation to join the New Plastics Economy initiative. Its goal is to completely reimagine how we produce, use and reuse plastics, and we are starting with an item of everyday use – packaging. Under this initiative, we will move towards a more circular economy. In practice, this means shifting from the high consumption of raw resources in mass producing quickly discarded packaging towards the utilization of more reusable, recyclable or compostable materials. These will ensure that more plastic will be kept in circulation, thereby reducing waste. Now, you might be wondering, how does one do all of this?</p><h2>Three ways of reaching ambitious goals</h2><p>First and foremost, this approach is about what we can do to provide value and help others. Joining the New Plastics Economy not only allows us to reach our established sustainability goals, but also allows us to enable others to do the same. A shared vision among all participants of this initiative makes reaching even the most ambitious goals possible.</p><p>Secondly, it’s about cooperation. With so many organizations joining the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s initiative, knowhow and support are spread along the whole value chain. Within a network of collaborating service providers, manufacturers, brand owners and other key players, it is simply easier to establish and share common ways of working and combine the best possible solutions for the challenges ahead.</p><p>Finally, we will all benefit from gaining a better industry view and understanding of the challenges we are facing. This will lead to accelerating the development of needed services and solutions. When organizations work together, the necessary and available solutions can be brought together to make sustainability goals materialize faster. Think of it as a cell phone, GPS and flashlight: all of these items alone serve a purpose, but by connecting them, we end up with a new device that is highly functional and open for further advancements. We are essentially aiming to develop the smart phone of packaging solutions.</p><p>We all have a part to play in making the world a better and cleaner place. This can be attempted alone or achieved by joining forces to discover new, previously hidden possibilities. I will look into the benefits of reducing fossil feedstock from the circular economy’s point of view. </p><p> <img src="https://assets.upmraflatac.com/Blog/UPM-Raflatac-Blog-Jan-Hasselblatt-main-2.jpg" alt="" style="margin:0px;" /> </p><p>My text will also examine how reductions to the use of raw materials in labeling translate into positive environmental impacts. Lastly, I’ll introduce you to some of UPM Raflatac’s solutions to labeling a smarter future beyond fossils.</p><h2>We Are Committed to the Circular Economy</h2><p>We live in a world where both our economy and society still heavily rely on oil and fossil-based raw materials in the majority of energy production and industrial processes. The detrimental effects of warming the planet by operating this way are very well known to everybody. Slowly but surely a fortunate change for the better, more sustainable living has started to emerge.</p><p>We now have a good library of more sustainable and bio-based raw materials at hand, and by committing to the circular economy, we can create a positive impact on the plastics waste issue. What is more, along with 350+ other companies globally, UPM Raflatac has made a commitment to the <strong>Ellen MacArthur Foundation </strong>to increase its sustainability collectively. With the help of these published commitments we promise to take action to make a real dent in the plastics waste issue and help brand owners reach their 2025 targets.</p><p>In the current environmental climate, we forecast that companies who are able to reduce their use of virgin fossil raw materials, make a shift beyond fossils and offer truly sustainable solutions, are the successful companies of the future. Personally, I consider this very important and am proud to be part of UPM Raflatac’s activities towards a much more sustainable world of labels. </p><h2>Environmental Benefits of Reducing</h2><p>Lighter products, all in all, have a wide range of environmental benefits. As a positive by-product, they also enhance stock efficiency and increase the number of labels per roll, which reduces the amount of start-up waste and downtime.</p><p>Lighter products also demand less fuel and packaging in logistics and transportation, which, again, creates a lesser impact on the environment. These may even create welcomed cuts in transportation and packaging costs.</p><p>Based on Label Life, our lifecycle assessment tool for our products, we know that 10-20% reductions to the use of raw materials translates into a similar percentage reduction in the environmental impact. The Label Life tool gives credible information on three fundamental environmental impacts: <strong>greenhouse gas emissions</strong>, <strong>energy use</strong>, and <strong>water consumption</strong>. It also enables users to compare Raflatac products with each other and choose a relevant end-of-life scenario for liner.</p><h2>UPM Raflatac’s Smart Labeling Solutions that Support Reducing</h2><p> <strong>Lite Films Range</strong>: By combining a lighter face material, a lower coat-weight adhesive and a lighter liner we truly reduce our environmental impact. Shared targets, knowledge and actions can be aimed to benefit society more broadly.</p><p>At UPM Raflatac, our focus is on sustainability issues that are strongly linked to our business strategy and operations, as we believe this is the way we can have a greater impact. This approach also applies to the environmental collaborations we engage in.</p><h2>Engaging employees for the good of the local community and environment</h2><p>UPM Raflatac’s cooperation with environmental organizations is part of UPM’s Biofore Share and Care Programme, which reflects our commitment to building a sustainable, innovation-driven future.</p><p>One of our key focus areas – responsible water use – was the leading motivation in our cooperation with the World Wildlife Fund in Poland (WWF Poland). The goal of the collaboration was to improve the responsible river management in Poland and return rivers, particularly the Oder River, closer to their natural state.</p><p>In addition to promoting clean water, this cooperation highlights another focus area of the Share and Care Programme very well: giving our people a chance to do good for the local community. For me personally, this has given an opportunity to do much more for a cause I am interested in than I would be able to do as an individual. The idea for the Oder project started from my personal, small donations to WWF, which I then started to speak about with our marketing people. Together, we saw how well the idea fit with UPM Raflatac’s vision, values and targets. What is more, the Oder runs close to our operations in Poland, making the connection very easy.</p><p>One aim of the collaboration is to both engage and educate our people. We encourage them to participate through either small actions, such as cleaning river banks, or in wider projects, like becoming river guardians, taking care of nature at a bigger scale. In addition, we have campaigns that inform our people about the importance of the work we are doing for the river. Through our employees, we can advance sustainable choices to an even wider audience and maximize our impact on these issues.</p><h2>WWF and UPM Raflatac: a collaboration that benefits both</h2><p>As a global player, we understand the current global challenges and to work on these it is natural for us to work with another leading global actor like WWF. Together we can have a greater impact, which alone is a valid reason for cooperating in sustainability. The next big issue we will tackle together is finding solutions towards a more circular economy.</p><p>Through our networks, we have been able to share information on WWF’s work and raise awareness about the value of healthy rivers. Especially in the world of <a href="https://www.upmraflatac.com/emea/en/solutions-and-services/product-ranges/" target="_blank">labeling </a>and packaging, there is a huge pressure to mitigate the non-sustainable use of plastics, to support sustainability, and to find more and better ecodesigned solutions for labeling products. </p><p>It is a topic that moves the labeling and packaging industry alike, as we all have to guarantee the <a href="https://www.upmraflatac.com/emea/en/sustainability" target="_blank">sustainability</a> of our products and do our share for a cleaner tomorrow. </p><h2>Reduce, Recycle and Renew at UPM Raflatac</h2><p>We have a long history of being in the forefront of sustainability. With the help of innovation, we have been able to place Reducing, Recycling and Renewing at the core of UPM Raflatac’s business. By focusing on these three essential measures at every stage of our <a href="https://www.upmraflatac.com/emea/en/sustainability/sustainable-value-chain" target="_blank">products’ lifecycle</a>, we are able to support the efficiency of circular economy and offer sustainable solutions to our customers and brand owners. But how do these three realize in UPM Raflatac’s work?</p><p> <strong>Reduce: </strong>From product design to engineering, reducing the use of resources can have a significant impact on the environment. With reduced use of raw materials, we can now offer thinner and lighter films with less grammage - without compromising the labels’ performance. Using less raw material also generates less waste and creates reductions of total consumer packaging. This also means higher efficiency for brand owners. </p><p> <strong>Recycle:</strong> As our label is a physical part of our customers’ packages, it is our job to ensure the recyclability of our and your products. To do this, we have been in the forefront of development for <a href="https://www.upmraflatac.com/emea/en/news/details/two-new-lightweight-solutions-for-wash-off-logistics-labeling" target="_blank">wash-off adhesives, which enables recyclability of PET containers</a>.</p><p>Ensuring that our labels can be easily removed, we optimize the recycling process of plastic packages and enhance the higher quality usage of recycled raw materials. Although certifications and codes of conduct might seem like just pieces of paper, they really do help us to achieve responsible sourcing and prevent illegal logging. Only through careful, well-designed systems like certification can forests be used as a source in a sustainable way.</p><h2>Certification makes the difference</h2><p>Forest certification is one of our main instruments in responsible sourcing. They are a credible tool for both us and the public, as they are globally recognized marks of well-managed and sustainable forest operations, where the risks of the supply chain mismanagement are minimized. They are defined and overseen by third-party, non-governmental organizations.</p><p>For brand owners, using only certified materials means being economically, environmentally and socially responsible. For the final product to be certified, the whole supply chain must be certified.</p><p>Increasingly, companies in our industry have adopted more ambitious sustainability goals regarding the environment and forests, which can only be met through the use of certification. </p><p>Moreover, certifications are vital for building consumer respect and strengthening brands. As end users are more and more interested in forest certified products, organizations should explore the certifications that today’s consumers choose.</p><h2>China on the road to being more conscious</h2><p>Naturally, there are differences among consumers in different regions. In emerging markets, such as China, product costs often remain the top priority, and certified forest products often have higher prices.</p><p>But gradually, consumer awareness of environmental issues – including the importance of certifications – is growing. The more forest certification logos the consumer sees, the more familiar they are. In China, big cities like Shanghai and Beijing are starting to work harder towards sustainability. Meanwhile, local organizations are realizing that sustainability delivers more end value to customers, and one way to reach sustainability goals is through forest certification.</p><p>In emerging markets, there is often a higher risk for human rights violations. This is why we at UPM Raflatac devote considerable attention to audits of our suppliers. When it comes to paper-based materials, we have already reached long life cycles, but now we need to get to the same point with plastics.</p><p> <img src="https://assets.upmraflatac.com/Blog/UPM-Raflatac-Blog-Juha-Virmavirta-main.jpg" alt="" style="margin:0px;" /> </p><p>While plastic is a very useful raw material, we still must develop new sustainable ways to recycle it. With the aim to have completely recyclable, reusable or compostable packaging by 2025, many brand owners are looking at closed-loop principles for handling plastic waste. And many organizations have also set a zero-landfill target.</p><h2>Solving the liner issue</h2><p>Like any manufacturing process, label production creates waste at different stages. There are waste streams to be handled in our own factories and also at the printers’ and brand owners’ manufacturing sites. For brand owners, one sizeable stream is the label liner. After labeling, the liner has done its duty, becoming waste… or a raw material if handled right!</p><p>Label liners today are either paper or PET plastic with a thin silicon coating. Disposing of liners brings both costs as well as an environmental issue: silicon is hard to get rid of, as it cannot be recycled with other paper material. Previously, liners were taken to landfills or burned, but these actions are now very costly or even banned.</p><p>Our solution is RafCycle, which transforms liners from a waste product into a resource. Liners collected from RafCycle partners get a new life as magazine paper or liner material. The solution removes the silicon problem and brings environmental benefits and cost savings for the brand owners.</p><p>Sustainability has been the motivation for Henkel’s Beauty Care and Laundry business units to partner with UPM Raflatac for a number of years already, ultimately reducing its production units label liner waste to zero. In 2018, this prevented more than 40 truckloads of liner waste going to landfills or incinerators.</p><h2>Sustainable waste stream management</h2><p>As always in the recycling process, including with RafCycle, there are some challenges to be overcome in efficiently collecting materials. Small batches of used liner material are everywhere, as labeling occurs across locations in bigger and smaller amounts.</p><p>We have solved this with our RafMore smart label solution, which is already in use in Denmark and Sweden. Each time a batch of liner material is taken to the warehouse, it is scanned. Our system then notifies us when the storage is nearly full, so we know when to collect the liner waste. To optimize pickup, the same truck can stop by other nearby label waste sites. Our real-time view of the situation means that brand owners do not need to call us for disposal, saving them both time and effort. Don’t forget the forests!http://www.upmraflatac.com/blog/Lists/Posts/ViewPost.aspx?ID=14Don’t forget the forests!<div class="ExternalClass52DAB7DF6D434D9C975CC63383B098DB"><p>​As the world focuses intently on the problems of plastics (and rightly so), the role of forests has almost completely dropped off the agenda when discussing circular economy and sustainable packaging.</p><p> <img src="https://assets.upmraflatac.com/Blog/UPM-Raflatac-Blog-Robert-Taylor-main.jpg" alt="" style="margin:0px;" /> </p><p>Forest-based materials provide real alternative solutions for plastics and remain a major part of our packaging and labels. Furthermore, fibres from sustainably managed forests have big advantages over their oil-based plastic counterparts.</p><h2>Share the positive story about forests</h2><p>For the last 20 years, the lifecycle approach to the environmental impacts of packaging materials has focused on reducing negative impacts, particularly CO2 emissions, energy demand and water consumption. Unfortunately, lifecycle assessment is limited in scope and does not consider the positive story of sustainable forests that accrues while the wood grows in terms of mitigating climate change, the water cycle and promoting wildlife habitats. That is a huge part of the story that is missing.</p><p>In order to understand this better, we at UPM Raflatac partnered with Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE), to develop a credible science-based methodology to calculate the ecosystem service benefit associated with the wood fibre used in our label products over the whole lifecycle. The resulting Forest Positive concept showed, for example, that the forest absorbs up to two times more carbon dioxide than the total CO2 emissions of the label paper during the whole product life cycle.</p><p>The other big advantage of fibre and paper products is certified forests and chain of custody. The fact you can track back to the logging site of origin allows you to assess the environmental and social impact all the way back through the whole supply chain. There is no credible system to do that with oil-based plastics.</p><p>On top of that it is only with fibre-based packaging you can have a positive impact. The suppliers of raw materials for bioplastics have woken up to this. This is why it should not be forgotten but kept high on the agenda. When a forest is sustainably managed, there is no better raw material source for packaging.</p><p>The next logical step is forest based biochemicals as raw materials for plastics.</p><h2>Brave brand owners go for forest-based solutions</h2><p>Many brand owners have now set very clear targets for 100% of its packaging to be recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025. Fibre and paper-based packaging provide solutions that reduce plastic use and in addition they have a positive impact story to go with it. Unfortunately, the change is not happening yet and despite the effective marketing and bold announcements, there are still too many brands driven solely by production costs.</p><p>Forests and fibre-based alternatives to plastic will become more widespread over the next couple of years. There is a clear need for brand owners to be brave enough to take the next step with forest-based solutions and find ways to bring them to market. To guide them in this mission, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation has defined three steps for a new plastics economy: design for recyclability, use recycled material and clearly communicate how to properly recycle. </p><p>As over 80% of the environmental impacts of packaging are determined in the product design stage, companies are wise to pay attention to designing for recyclability.</p><h2>Reaching a circular economy, solution by solution</h2><p>When brand owners want to advance the circular economy, they need solutions that optimize the recyclability of packaging. For example, if we have a PET bottle that is recycled into new material, the labels and their adhesives can cause browning, yield loss or quality problems during recycled PET flakes production.</p><p>However, wash-off adhesives for PET packages can be easily separated during the caustic washing process. This simple choice of adhesive enables the recovery of clean, high-value PET flakes. These wash-off solutions can reduce contamination and allow brand owners to design for recyclability. The right design approach can further enhance the quality of recycled flake, which in turn can be used as recycled content in new packaging materials. </p><h2>The green consumer chooses recycled content</h2><p>If we want the circular economy to become a reality, we should give new life to recycled materials, instead of using virgin sources.</p><p>The benefits of implementing post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastics in production are numerous. In addition to not consuming virgin fossil-based materials, it also brings CO2 and energy savings. Furthermore, there is also a clear consumer demand for it. The growing green consumer segment will choose more sustainable products and packaging.</p><p>Many brands have targets to increase recycled content in their packaging. The labels are often overlooked, as they typically account for the smallest proportion of the package by weight and rarely contain any recycled content. With the growing demand for recycled content, we at UPM Raflatac strive to be a solution provider and have thus launched a groundbreaking innovation – 90% PCR PET labels. This is, in a sense, the last remaining piece of the puzzle – the missing link in sustainable packaging.</p><p>When a brand utilizes recycled content in its packaging, it is always a win-win situation – for the environment and the business. Shifting to a truly circular model means moving away from today’s dominant linear produce-use-dispose model. In a circular system, products and materials move around continuously and are not disposed after use, but are instead reused or recycled.</p><p> <img src="https://assets.upmraflatac.com/Blog/UPM-Raflatac-Blog-Oona-Koski-main.jpg" alt="" style="margin:5px 0px;" /> </p><p>The Ellen MacArthur Foundation (EMF) Circular Economy 100 programme, which UPM Raflatac has joined, is a global network promoting this change. The foundation advances a circular economy by sharing concrete actions and innovations with a variety of actors from across society.</p><h2>Sustainable solutions only come from common targets</h2><p>Building a circular future requires several steps and true collaboration. The first step is to form common targets – without them, there are no shared priorities, and the circular economy will be mere words.</p><p>Common targets help us address key questions and improve processes and production. For example, many products are not optimized for recycling. Labels that are compostable or ideally supporting package recycling may currently be mismatched with the wrong product composition which make the original circular design useless. These gaps between the old and upcoming systems needs to be closed, and in this case, the common target of increasing recyclability clarifies obvious sustainable solutions.</p><p>In addition to enhancing existing processes, we need new projects based on the circular economy, such as the EMF-led New Plastics Economy Global Commitment. UPM Raflatac is one of 350 signatory organizations, many of whom have committed to 100% of their plastic packaging being reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025.</p><h2>Free flow of information in every direction</h2><p>In the linear economy model, both materials and information move only in one direction. The designers and manufactures rarely, and only slowly, get any feedback from end customers, delaying their reactions to needs in the market.</p><p>Only when information and knowledge flows freely in every direction can a model indeed be circular. Information is needed at all value chain stages, from innovation and design to product development, manufacturing, use, reuse and recycling. Information sharing and open discussion enable the creation of holistic solutions for a sustainable future.</p><p>Shared information and a shared understanding of a circular economy – including the steps and challenges involved in reaching this goal – are necessary. But we also need to test and implement these steps in reality. Hence, we at UPM Raflatac are searching and implementing new innovations for smarter and more circular labeling and packaging solutions – for example, using removable labels to enable package reuse.
