At UPM Raflatac, social responsibility is an integral part of our sustainability approach. We take responsibility for our actions and our impact on society wherever we operate. For example, providing a safe work environment for our employees and contractors, and respecting and engaging with all stakeholders, whether they are global customers or local communities, is one of the keys to being responsible, competitive and innovative. It also means that we respect the environment local communities live in, everywhere we work. Because being socially responsible is important for sustainability and a smarter future.
Consumer safety in the label industry
At UPM Raflatac, consumer safety is one of our priorities. Just like our customers and brand owners, we work in highly regulated business areaswhere safeguarding consumer safety is vital. Our labels are designed to meet their specific needs, and we ensure that the products we offer them meet all relevant legal and industry requirements. We take product safety into account through the whole lifecycle of our labels, all the way from the procurement of raw materials to the delivery of end products and their disposal.
Regulatory authorities consider labels to be an integral part of food packaging and our range of products for the food industry is designed so that our customers can label food safely and according to the regulations in their region. For example, in the EU our self-adhesive labels must comply with Frame regulation EC 1935/2004 and in the US they have to comply with U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulation 21 CFR 175.105 – Adhesives. We offer a wide selection of label materials and adhesives to meet these demanding requirements.

For customers in the oil and industrial chemical industries, we provide labels which meet the requirements for both toughness and compliance in the most challenging of environments. In these industries, labels must remain readable to ensure user safety even in the presence of heat, oxidation, water and UV light, even after exposure to oil or chemicals. We offer several products that are compliant with British Standard BS5609. This is an established standard for self-adhesive labels intended for marine use, such as those used on chemical drums.
