FSC® certification adds commercial value to the label industryhttp://www.upmraflatac.com/apac/en/news/details/fsc-certification-adds-commercial-value-to-label-industryFSC® certification adds commercial value to the label industry15/02/2016 07:00:00News;Sustainability

“Label manufacturers and suppliers can enhance their commercial value through FSC® certification,” said FSC® representative Jayco Fung at Labelexpo Asia last December, explaining the significance of certification for the development of the label industry.

“As a two-way incentive system, FSC® certification not only helps each buyer find the right supplier from more than 30,000 FSC-certified companies, but also helps each seller enhance its market competitiveness. It is an authoritative international forest certification system, indicating that the label raw materials are obtained from responsible forestry. In addition, it further increases the transparency of the production chains of certified enterprises. This certification has now been recognized by many Fortune 500 international companies,” she continued.

At Labelexpo Asia, FSC® introduced a new brand image. Animal and human elements have been added to the new logo, indicating that forest certification focuses on not only the trees, but all of the lives in the forest, forest habitats and ecosystems.

The expectation is that the public will recognize that in addition to forest products, FSC® certification also covers packaging and label products as well as non-wood forest products such as bamboo and rubber products. By raising affinity with the logo, FSC® hopes the public will realize the value of the natural resources that humans depend on.

As upstream and downstream enterprises in the forestry and paper industry become increasingly concerned about the environment and ecology, FSC® will partner and communicate with more brands to expand certification coverage – one of FSC®’s original intentions with the change of brand image.

“As one of the label industry’s leaders, UPM Raflatac has become a role model for other companies in terms of sustainable development by complying with FSC® certification standards for cost, source and product,” added Jayco.

Sustainable sourcing and traceability for all packaging materials has grown in importance globally. Having a Chain of Custody means that UPM Raflatac label materials contain wood fiber verifiably sourced from sustainably managed forests. UPM Raflatac is now selling around 700 forest certified products globally for an expanding range of labelling applications.

“The FSC® certification system helps us standardize our daily operational management. We are also expecting more upstream and downstream enterprises from the supply chain to join, so that the market will continue to grow and develop,” said Sharon Xiao, Sustainability Manager at UPM Raflatac Greater China.

As the rigorous FSC® standards are widely recognized in the world, more and more Chinese enterprises are vigorously supporting certification. Also, with the increasingly stringent EU Timber Regulations, forest and paper companies have further improved their procurement standards. Unilever is planning to obtain forest certification for the packaging and labeling of its brands. IKEA will require both paper and wood products in its stores to be FSC® certified in the next few years. These brand owner demands for FSC® certification have sent a signal for sustainable development to Chinese label enterprises – requiring them to implement responsible product sourcing and procurement, and to show a responsible corporate image to the public, brand owners and vendors.

* * *

Read also: UPM Raflatac promotes the FSC Forests For All Forever branding

"As one of the label industry’s leaders, UPM Raflatac has become a role model for other companies in terms of sustainable development by complying with FSC® certification standards for cost, source and product,” says FSC® representative Jayco Fung.
