METRO Group announced a mandate in November 2004 that required its top 20 suppliers, including Nestlé, to start shipping RFID-tagged product pallets. In addition to fulfilling the mandate, Nestlé proactively created an automatic pallet labelling device for a uniform type of UHF RFID tag. Nestlé was among the fastest to achieve automatic labelling on its goods pallets with fully functional UHF RFID tags. An automatic labelling unit utilizing Rafsec tags by UPM Raflatac went into operation at Nestlé’s distribution centre in Rangsdorf, Germany, in January 2005.
