Die übliche Frequenz für RFID-Hochfrequenzsysteme (HF) beträgt 13,56 MHz. Der Hochfrequenzbereich ist weltweit akzeptiert. In der Regel arbeiten HF-RFID-Systeme mit passiven Transpondern und bieten gute Leistungen in Umgebungen mit Metallen und Flüssigkeiten. HF-Systeme werden allgemein in Anwendungen für Bibliotheken, Massenabfertigung und Produktauthentifizierung eingesetzt.
NFC (Near Field Communication) ist eine Radiofrequenz-Kommunikationstechnik für kurze Strecken: sie ermöglicht einen Datenaustausch zwischen Geräten, die nur wenige Zentimeter voneinander entfernt sind. Die Technologie folgt dem Kurzstrecken-Funkstandard ISO 14443 und verbindet die Schnittstelle von RFID-gestützten Karten oder Tickets mit einem Reader in einer einzigen Einheit. Ein NFC-Gerät ist in der Lage, mit RFID-Karten oder –Tickets und Lese- sowie anderen NFC-Geräten zu kommunizieren. Es ist daher mit vorhandenen berührungsfreien Infrastrukturen kompatibel.
