Rafsec and Magellan Technology signed a licence agreement

15.4.2003

We are pleased to announce that Rafsec Oy, headquartered in Tampere, Finland, and Magellan Technology Pty Ltd, headquartered in Sydney, Australia have recently signed a licence agreement. The licence grants Rafsec the right to manufacture RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) Transponders that are compatible with the new ISO 18000 standard from chips supplied by Magellan or Magellan's licensed chip manufacturers.

Rafsec Oy has been producing RFID Transponders that enable the wireless identification of products since 1999, and has quickly become a world leader in this business.

Rafsec specialises in the production and development of card, ticket, label and in-mould transponders using cost effective, high quality antennas. Rafsec has also developed lamination, converting and quality assurance technologies, which are especially designed for RFID Transponder manufacturing, utilizing the expertise of their mother company, UPM-Kymmene Corporation.

Magellan Technology specialises in developing state of the art RFID technology that includes both tags and readers. Magellan's unique technology conforms particularly well to the upcoming RFID standard ISO 18000-3 mode 2 (FDIS). This ISO standard is expected to be published later this year. Magellan Technology has Infineon Technologies, Siemens and Marubeni as shareholders.

Magellan Technology offers unique capabilities in the field of RFID, such as:

  • Extremely high data-rates up to 424 kbit/s downlink and 848 kbit/s uplink.
  • Very high anti-collision of up to several thousand tags within, entering and leaving a reading field.
  • Stack Tag systems that have solved the challenge of reading many hundreds of tags as close to each other as 1 mm.
  • Large tag memory up to 10 kbits.
  • Fully shielded and robust readers.
  • Large Tunnel Readers optimised for industrial conveyor type applications.
  • Small Tunnel Readers.
  • Large and Small Batch Readers for reading closely stacked tags.
  • Desk Top, Panel and Hand Held Readers.

Magellan's unique technological capabilities provide the RFID end-user with new and innovative solutions that can be used in all sorts of applications including the supply chain, postal, logistics, brand protection and wherever multiple tags are used in high-speed industrial applications.

Rafsec, by becoming a Magellan Technology licensed transponder manufacturer, will be able to offer its customers a complete range of customised transponders based upon the ISO 18000-3 mode 2 standard, in addition to its present range of products.

Magellan Technology equipment is exclusively manufactured and distributed through a global network of licensees. Rafsec joins the ranks of other Magellan Technology licensees such as Infineon Technologies AG, The Nippon Signal Co. Ltd, and. Höft & Wessel AG

Both Rafsec and Magellan Technology expect the market for this advanced RFID technology to grow rapidly in the coming years.
