Logistics and Transport Labelling

Any transported product requires identification, and self-adhesive labels are often used for this purpose.

Labels that conform to BS5609 are recommended for labelling chemical drums, marine transport included.

Recent legislation from the European Parliament concerning motor vehicles (ELV Directive) has been introduced to prevent waste from these items when they have reached the end of their useful life.

Part of the legislation restricts the use of certain chemicals in these items, which applies to all components used, including labels. One aspect concerns the restriction of the heavy metals lead, cadmium, mercury and hexavalent chromium.

Analyses of various laminates for heavy metal content have already been carried out with regard to the Packaging Directive 94/62/EC. The results obtained showed that typical values are:

  • Lead less than 2ppm
  • Cadmium less than 2ppm
  • Mercury less than 2ppm
  • Hexavalent Chromium less than 2ppm
