Thin Range PP30 liner wins approval at Birkhäuser AG, Switzerland

Birkhäuser, one of the largest label and graphic printers in Switzerland, currently uses Thermal Top P 200 with a glassine backing for labelling applications in the food industry, meat processing in particular. Trials look promising with the new ProLiner PP30.

Birkhäuser AG:
Thomas Rhein

Always on the lookout for efficient solutions, Technical Manager Thomas Rhein discovered UPM Raflatac’s PP30 liner at Labelexpo and recognized the potential.

The thin ProLiner ProLiner PP30 yields longer rolls per equivalent roll diameter, which Mr Rhein estimates gives almost an hour’s extra production a day: in Birkhäuser’s processes, each roll change takes 8 to 10 minutes, and roll changes can be reduced from the daily 16 to 11.

Trials on the converting line also indicate a calculated 10% increase in converting speed due to a much reduced risk of web breaks, especially during matrix removal. Tests are now pending with a significant end-user in the meat industry.

Benefits down the line

Birkhäuser have had little difficulty convincing their customer to trial the new material, as the benefits of longer rolls, faster line speeds and a much reduced risk of liner breakage are just as advantageous to the end-user as they are the printer.

Thomas Rhein now anticipates healthy demand for thinner labelstocks based on film liners like ProLiner PP30 in the dairy products industry, where maximum benefit is sought from faster new machinery.

The RH 9 adhesive on the labelstock is designed for applications involving moisture and chilled conditions and offers good performance throughout the cold chain. The high cohesion of this adhesive also contributes to higher speeds in converting and dispensing, with excellent feedback received from millions of square metres supplied to date.

While the ProLiner PP30 is designed for paper label faces, the Thin Range includes a PET25 liner supplying similar benefits with PE and PP film faces.
