Moscow Metro
Keeping your business on track: You operate one of the world’s busiest metro systems, with 12 lines and 172 stations. Everyday it carries more than 8 million passengers. You need to speed up journey times, cut down on ticket fraud and increase reliability. What’s more, you want to do all this with as little trouble as possible. Where do you start?
Well, the easiest route is to follow the example of the Moscow Metro and work with UPM Raflatac, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of RFID tags and inlays. In collaboration with Comvision Russland and JSC Mikron, our experts put their heads together to come up with the most effective solution. Until the start of 2007, passengers without a season ticket had to make do with magnetic stripe cards for a fixed number of journeys. As well as tearing easily, these could be counterfeited and resold. Eager to enhance the system, UPM Raflatac rolled out the pilot at the start of 2007.
In the first stage of the process, UPM Raflatac will supply five million HF inlays based on the Mifare Ultralight standard every month. After a transitional period at the end of the summer 2007, this will increase to a massive thirty million inlays per month. With the new system in place, passengers will use an RFID ticket that will be tracked by an RFID reader as they enter the boarding area. This means less congestion, less delays and less headaches for the millions of people who use the metro.
The people whose lives have been made a whole lot easier are not the only ones happy with the new way of doing things. Marcus Vaenerberg, Vice President of Sales, UPM Raflatac has a lot of reasons to be smiling, too. “Mass transit ticketing is one of the biggest application areas for HF RFID. Being chosen by the leading metro system clearly demonstrates that our HF inlays have the quality and performance required in mass transit.”
That says it all. The future of public transport is changing for the better. If your transit system is in need of an upgrade, be sure to let us know. At UPM Raflatac we dedicate our time, expertise and innovative ideas to making sure things always run more smoothly.
