Korea Airports Corporation selects UPM Raflatac's RFID inlays for airline baggage tracking

24.9.2007

UPM Raflatac will supply 350,000 UHF EPC Generation 2 inlays to Korea Airports Corporation for airline baggage tracking. UPM Raflatac's RFID baggage tag, Rabbit, was selected as it offers the best performance and excellent durability in baggage handling services.

By using RFID technology, Korea Airports Corporation seeks to improve its logistics efficiency and reduce the number of lost or damaged baggage. The RFID implementation project has a budget of USD 3.3 million being the biggest South Korean government supported RFID project this year. In addition to the RFID inlays, the infrastructure will cover 98 fixed readers and 85 printers at Asiana Airline's airports including Gimpo, Korea and Haneda, Japan.

“UPM Raflatac has developed the Rabbit UHF inlay specifically for airline baggage use. Rabbit has a high performance dual dipole antenna and high orientation insensitivity that ensure the performance throughout baggage handling operations. It is also designed for easy and low cost machine conversion into standard airline baggage tags. We believe the Rabbit's success will continue as airlines globally implement RFID technology,” says Mr Edward Lu, RFID Sales and Marketing Director, APAC at UPM Raflatac.

Benefits of RFID for airlines and airports include increased revenue, better management of airport infrastructure, reduction in operating cost, better brand position and enhanced safety and control. For the passengers RFID means fewer lost baggage claims, faster resolution of problems and more importantly getting timely and accurate information on the baggage.
