Rafsec In-Mould Tag, now also available with ePC

8.9.2003

Rafsec announces the extension of its in-mould transponder technology to ultra -high frequency (UHF~900Mhz). As the company indicated when it announced the availability of high frequency (HF~13.56Mhz) Rafsec In-Mould Tags, development would continue to extend in-mould technology to allow all the longer reading distance RFID protocols to be used based on customer need or preference.

Rafsec's in-mould technology allows RFID tags to be integrally moulded when a plastic part is made. Plastic parts can be either injection moulded or blow moulded. Rafsec's technology assures RFID tag adherence without any delamination or structural compromise. It allows RFID tags to withstand the frequent hot water, aggressive chemical washes associated with many returnable assets.

The UHF protocols available today with an in-mould format are Class 1 ePC and ISO 18000-6. The available HF protocols include Class 1 ePC and ISO 15693. Any other protocol can be qualified very quickly according to customer requirements.

Randy Stigall, Rafsec's VP for Business Unit Asset & Inventory Management, comments, "Rafsec's in-mould technology really brings the cost of RFID down by matching the lifespan of the tag to the lifespan of returnable assets. For most Returnable Plastic Crates (RPCs), the cost per turn in the supply chain is now less than a penny."

Rafsec has carried out the initial development in Europe with Bekuplast to validate that the In-Mould Tag can be integrally moulded into supermarket meat trays. Rafsec is currently working with several moulders in the US to expand the availability of the technology to the North American continent. Several additional qualified moulders are scheduled to be announced by the end of the year.
