UPM promotes good forest practices through forest certification. Certified forests are those that have been assessed as being managed sustainably. This means that environmental, social and economic aspects of forest management are taken into account.
UPM recognises and utilises all credible forest certification schemes including the two major international ones, namely FSC (Forest Stewardship Council™) and PEFC (the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes) and which have developed standards for verifying sustainable forest management. By fulfilling these forest management standards and tracking the wood from the forest to product using chain of custody, the FSC or PEFC logo may be used.
Having a chain of custody for FSC and PEFC verifies that the wood used in a product is from:
- Sustainably managed forests
- Legally harvested
- Controlled and from non-controversial sources
Currently about 9% of the world’s forests are certified. The availability of certified paper for UPM Raflatac products depends on the amount and type of certified wood and pulp available to the Paper mills supplying UPM Raflatac.
